History of Saltley College Lodge

A fellow Life President of the Old Students1 Association was a very forceful character....W.Bro. Bob Williams, who never missed a college Re-union. He had been the first S.W. of this lodge, and our Second W.M. From time to time he gave me keepsakes. Years ago he gave me his copy of the Consecration summons, and the menu card of that occasion. Then he gave me a fairly large silver cup, which I passed onto the Lodge. This was then put in our locker here, and was 'lost'for several years. It was eventually found, and as I was then secretary it was put into my safe keeping. I hope that the lodge will now take it from me. I suggest that it could be inscribed, in memory of W.Bro. Bob., to record our Golden Jubilee, and used at our Installation meetings. I shudder to think of the storage, carting, and...... cleaning).

In our early years each Master was presented with an inscribed silver cup. His cup, his Founder's Jewel, his P.M. Breast Jewel, and his Hall Stone Jewel I today present to the Lodge. I hope that you will be pleased to see them.

The late W. Bro. Howard Shilton and I had arranged to produce a story of Saltley College Lodge, and had begun sorting out lists etc. when he died suddenly last September. A very great loss to our lodge. Luckily our Assistant Sec. kept the lodge business running smoothly for our Installation and December meetings, when W. Bro. Ron Ottley became sec., and with great success. He has been most helpful to me in researching many items.

It is well to review the past at this 50th birthday meeting, but what of the future? Inflation is making travel, food, wine, maintenance of our charities, and ownership of properties, very expensive. We hope that the spirit so far evinced in this lodge will make us all determined to support this lodge and freemasonry to the full

G. H. I. June, 1981.
