History of Saltley College Lodge

For generations many 'Old Salts' had sought posts in London (higher salaries, more rapid promotion, etc.). Most of them returned to college for our July re-union. In London they also organised a monthly smoking concert, at the Fountain Inn, Foster Lane, E.C. These evening meetings attended by teacher colleagues and their wives, were most enjoyable. The mason members, especially Old Salts, decided to form a new lodge. The Old Chelts (from St. Paul's College, Cheltenham....always our great chums and rivals), already had a most successful lodge, Chelt. No. 3240. They volunteered to be the sponsors. The first meeting of potential Founders was held at the Fountain Inn, on 9th January, 1931 with Chas. Pointer in the chair, and with Edgar Humphreys as Secretary. Three more 'Founder' meetings were held, leading to the actual Consecration on 18th December, 1931. There were finally but 10 Founders, John Gibson, being the only Old Chelt. The Consecrating Officer was VW. Bro. Sir Colville Smith, Grand Sec. His S.W. was the Provincial Grand Master of Warwickshire, Col. Wyley, who was a great friend to our college, especially through our Corp., and the Annual Camps at Stoneleigh.
